Lovina Beach on Bali’s north coast offers one of the island’s most reliably extraordinary wildlife experiences: watching hundreds of wild spinner dolphins leaping and twirling in the early morning light of the Bali Sea. This guided tour combines dolphin watching with snorkelling over North Bali’s spectacular and relatively uncrowded coral reefs.

Departure is before sunrise — typically around 5:30am — when small outrigger jukung boats push out from Lovina’s black sand beach into the calm pre-dawn water. The Bali Sea in the north is characteristically calmer than the southern Indian Ocean, creating ideal conditions for both dolphin observation and comfortable snorkelling. The fishermen who captain these boats have spent their lives on these waters and know exactly where the dolphin pods congregate.

Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) are highly social animals that travel in groups of up to 200 individuals. At Lovina they gather in the early morning to socialise and feed before retreating to deeper water. Watching them spin and leap in the golden pre-dawn light — sometimes coming within metres of the boats — is genuinely spectacular. Photographers should bring telephoto lenses for the best shots.

After the dolphin encounter, the boats move to several excellent snorkelling sites over Lovina’s coral gardens. These reefs, while less visited than those at Amed or Tulamben, are home to a remarkable diversity of reef fish: wrasse, parrotfish, triggerfish, clownfish in anemones, and if you’re lucky, the occasional reef shark or sea turtle. Water visibility is typically 15-20 metres.

The return to shore is timed with the full sunrise, so you arrive back at the beach with the mountains of North Bali illuminated behind you. A traditional Balinese breakfast is served at a beachside warung after the tour.
