Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

The Mount Batur Sunrise Trek is widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s greatest dawn experiences — an exhilarating pre-dawn climb up an active volcano that rewards you with a sunrise so beautiful it brings grown adults to tears. At 1,717 metres above sea level, Batur is Bali’s second highest peak and its most active volcano, last erupting as recently as 2000.

The journey begins around 2am, when your certified local guide collects you from your accommodation in the Kintamani area. The steep trail winds upward through alternating zones of dense tropical forest and exposed volcanic terrain — black lava fields from past eruptions that shimmer ghostlike in your headlamp’s beam. The path is demanding but entirely manageable for anyone with moderate fitness and a sense of adventure.

Approximately two hours of climbing brings you to the crater rim just as the eastern horizon begins to glow. As the sun breaks over the Lombok volcano silhouette and floods Lake Batur below with gold, you’ll understand why this trek has become a Bali rite of passage. Your guide will prepare a simple breakfast of hardboiled eggs steamed in volcanic vents — a remarkable geological trick that only works here.

From the summit, on a clear day, you can see Mount Agung to the east, the entire caldera and its lake far below, and on exceptionally clear mornings, the islands of Lombok and Nusa Penida. The descent follows a different trail through coffee and clove plantations, with an optional stop at a natural hot spring for a well-earned soak in volcanic waters.

All necessary equipment is provided: headlamps, trekking poles, and warm layers for the cold summit hours. No previous mountaineering experience is required, though a basic level of fitness is recommended. The trek is genuinely transformative — a reminder that Bali’s natural wonders are every bit as extraordinary as its cultural heritage.
