The Sacred Monkey Forest of Padangtegal is one of Ubud’s most popular attractions during the day, but visiting after sunset transforms it into something altogether more extraordinary. The long-tailed macaque troops that dominate the forest during daylight hours have settled for the night, and the ancient Pura Dalem temple ruins emerge from the darkness in a completely different light — literally.

Walking the stone paths by lantern light, with the calls of night insects replacing the chattering of monkeys, the forest reveals its deeper spiritual character. The three temples within the forest complex — Pura Dalem Agung, Pura Beji, and Pura Prajapati — are sacred sites of genuine religious importance, associated with death, purification, and the cycle of rebirth in Balinese Hinduism. Night is when their atmosphere is most fully felt.

Your local guide, who has walked these paths since childhood, will share stories from Balinese mythology that give each moss-covered shrine and carved stone figure its narrative context. The famous stone statues that guard the temple gates — kala faces, naga serpents, and demonic figures — take on an entirely different presence in the flickering light. The forest’s ancient waringin fig trees, their aerial roots creating cave-like spaces, are architectural wonders of the natural world.

Nocturnal wildlife is an unexpected treat. Fruit bats wheel overhead. Frogs chorus in the stream below the main bridge. Occasionally, a slow loris or flying squirrel may be spotted — reminders that the forest is a real ecosystem, not a performance.

The tour is kept deliberately small (maximum 8 participants) to preserve the atmosphere of silence and discovery. Advance booking is essential.
