Bali International Film Festival Balinale

The Bali International Film Festival, known as Balinale, is Southeast Asia’s most distinctive film festival — an annual gathering that brings international independent cinema to the paradise island of Bali, creating a unique combination of serious film culture and the relaxed, tropical atmosphere that makes Bali one of the world’s great creative destinations.

Founded in 2007, Balinale has grown from a small gathering of film enthusiasts into a genuine film market and festival with submissions from over 50 countries. Its programming philosophy prioritises films that challenge, inspire, and expand perspectives — with a particular emphasis on voices from Southeast Asia, Pacific Asia, and the Global South that are underrepresented on the mainstream festival circuit.

The Opening Gala is the festival’s flagship event — a red carpet evening in Seminyak featuring the world or regional premiere of the opening film, followed by a reception where filmmakers, critics, actors, and Bali’s creative community mingle in an atmosphere that combines genuine cinematic excitement with the easy sociability that the island inspires. The gala has become one of the most anticipated events on Bali’s annual social calendar.

Screenings take place at several venues across Seminyak and Kuta, including boutique cinemas, hotel screening rooms, and — in one of the festival’s most magical touches — outdoor screenings under the stars at beach club venues. The sight of international documentary or narrative film projected against a backdrop of tropical night sky, ocean breeze stirring the palms, is uniquely Balinale.

Director Q&A sessions after screenings provide direct access to filmmakers, and Balinale’s reputation for genuine hospitality means these conversations are often exceptionally candid and illuminating.
