The Bali Marathon is one of Asia’s most visually spectacular running events — a full 42.195km course through the scenic heart of Gianyar regency that takes participants past ancient temples, emerald rice paddies, traditional Balinese villages, and coastal roads with ocean views that make even the hardest kilometres feel worthwhile.

The race has grown consistently since its founding to attract over 10,000 participants from more than 50 countries, establishing itself as one of the region’s most prestigious and sought-after marathon events. The combination of beautiful scenery, genuine local community participation, and excellent organisation makes this a race that runners return to year after year.

Race start is at 4am to beat the tropical heat — a pre-dawn departure that transforms the first hour into a magical experience of running through sleeping Balinese villages lit by ceremonial torches and the gradually brightening horizon. The course is designed to showcase Gianyar’s remarkable landscape diversity: highland rice terrace sections, coastal flat running, and village lanes where local families line the route with offerings and genuine encouragement.

The aid station programme at Bali Marathon is famously generous: 11 stations stocked with water, isotonic drinks, bananas, orange slices, and energy gels, supplemented by volunteer groups offering fresh coconut water, local snacks, and cool spray from garden hoses. The finish line celebration at Gianyar’s sports centre features live traditional music, post-race massage, and a buffet of Balinese food that is specifically designed for post-marathon recovery.

Elite categories with prize money attract competitive runners from East Africa and across Asia, while the mass participation start includes pace groups from 3:30 through 6:00 finish time, making the race accessible to runners of widely varying ability.
