The Sanur Village Festival is one of Bali’s most beloved annual events — a five-day celebration held on the iconic Sanur beachfront that combines traditional Balinese culture with international artistry in a format that is genuinely accessible and deeply enjoyable for visitors of all backgrounds. The Cultural Night is the festival’s signature evening, featuring performances of exceptional quality against a stunning beach backdrop.
Sanur Beach provides a perfect natural amphitheatre: the stage is set with the Indian Ocean as its backdrop, and the cooling evening sea breeze makes for extremely comfortable outdoor viewing. The audience is a wonderful mix of local Balinese families, expatriate residents, and international visitors — all united by a shared appreciation of extraordinary performance.
The Cultural Night programme typically opens with a traditional Balinese welcome dance performed by young students from local arts schools, followed by a succession of increasingly elaborate performances. Highlights often include the rarely-seen Wayang Wong — a masked theatrical performance based on Ramayana episodes that uses elaborate painted masks representing dozens of mythological characters. The legong and barong performances that follow are of festival-competition standard.
International artists joining Balinese performers for intercultural collaborations are a particular feature of the Sanur Festival. Past editions have seen Balinese gamelan orchestras performing alongside Japanese taiko drummers, West African kora players, and Indian classical vocalists — creating genuinely thrilling musical dialogues between traditions.
The surrounding festival grounds host traditional craft stalls, food vendors from across Bali’s regencies, and exhibitions of traditional Balinese art and architecture. A kite-making workshop for children and a traditional boat parade on the beach during the day complement the evening programme.
