Pura Besakih is the most sacred site in all of Bali — the Mother Temple, spiritual centre of the island, and the one place where Balinese Hinduism in its complete, undiluted form can be witnessed. Situated on the southwestern slopes of the sacred Mount Agung at 1,000 metres above sea level, the complex comprises 86 separate temples spread across a dramatic mountain landscape that has been venerated for over a thousand years.

The origins of Besakih are shrouded in mythology. According to Balinese tradition, the temple was founded in the 8th century by the Hindu sage Rsi Markandeya, who arrived from Java and meditated at the site of a natural spring. Archaeological evidence suggests human occupation of the site as far back as prehistoric times, and the earliest confirmed stone structures date from the 10th century CE.

The complex is organised around the central sanctuary of Pura Penataran Agung — the royal temple of the kingdom of Gelgel and later Klungkung — whose eleven-roofed meru tower is the iconic image of Besakih. This towering structure, built from black ijuk palm fibre that is naturally waterproof, is visible from kilometres away and dominates the entire temple precinct.

Our guided pilgrimage is accompanied by a Balinese priest who has personal family connections to the Besakih temple community. This provides access to aspects of the complex that ordinary tourist visits cannot offer: explanations of the temple’s active religious calendar, the meanings of specific offerings and architectural elements, and the opportunity to observe genuine religious activity rather than a managed tourist experience.

The mountain setting is spectacular — Agung’s volcano summit occasionally visible through cloud, the jungle-covered slopes dropping away steeply below, and the vast panorama of South Bali spreading to the horizon.
