Padangbai on Bali’s east coast is the island’s principal ferry port for Lombok and the Gili Islands, but its waters hide some of the finest snorkelling in all of Bali — particularly at the Blue Lagoon and the nearby Bias Tugel beach, where visibility often exceeds 20 metres and marine biodiversity is exceptional.

The Blue Lagoon is Padangbai’s signature snorkelling site — a sheltered bay reached by a short walk along a clifftop path from the port. The name is no exaggeration: the water here achieves a particularly vivid shade of blue-green, created by the combination of white sand bottom, clear East Bali waters, and the surrounding limestone cliffs. Snorkelling directly from the beach, you’re immediately over living coral within 10 metres of shore.

The reef at Blue Lagoon supports a remarkable community of marine life. Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are regular visitors — these ancient mariners often graze on sea grass at the lagoon’s southern end and are completely accustomed to respectful snorkellers. The coral gardens are home to dozens of species of reef fish: schools of sweetlips and sergeant majors, pairs of butterflyfish, solitary pufferfish, and the inevitable clownfish guarding their anemone homes.

Bias Tugel (White Sand Beach) is Padangbai’s most beautiful beach — a small, sheltered crescent of white sand accessible only by a 15-minute coastal walk from the port, keeping it relatively uncrowded even at the height of the tourist season. Snorkelling from this beach reveals a different reef community, with more abundant coral coverage and frequent sightings of cuttlefish, moray eels, and banded sea snakes.

Equipment rental is available at both sites. Our guided experience includes a skilled local guide who knows exactly where the turtles congregate and the best entry points for each reef section.
