White water rafting on the Ayung River is Bali’s most popular adventure experience — a thrilling 9km journey through a spectacular jungle gorge that combines adrenaline, natural beauty, and cultural discovery in equal measure. The Ayung is a Grade II-III river, meaning it offers genuine excitement without requiring any previous experience.
The river enters a dramatic gorge approximately 3km below its source in the Bedugul highlands, carving through walls of dense tropical jungle that tower 30 metres above the water on both sides. The result is a remarkably private world — a green cathedral entirely hidden from the surrounding farmland and roads. The sound of the water, the calls of kingfishers and hornbills, and the roar of approaching rapids are the only sounds.
The 2-hour rafting journey negotiates 33 rapids of varying intensity, from playful splashing sections to proper whitewater drops that generate genuine screams from the four-person inflatable rafts. Expert guides sit at the stern of each raft, controlling direction and coaching paddlers through the technical sections with clear, calm instruction. Safety records are excellent; the Ayung has been rafted commercially for over 30 years.
Between rapids, the gorge reveals extraordinary natural and cultural features. Ancient stone carvings — figures, mythological creatures, and narrative scenes — are chiselled directly into the canyon walls above the waterline. These carvings date from the 19th century and were created by Hindu priests to sanctify the gorge. Several spectacular waterfalls cascade directly into the river from hidden side canyons, and the vegetation changes character as you descend through different microhabitats.
The experience concludes with a traditional Balinese lunch served in an open-sided pavilion at the river’s end, with spectacular views over the gorge.
